Web comics can allow the reader to <em>digitally<\/em> interact with the story &#8211; clicking back and forth between pages, displaying animation and emitting sounds. Those that make use of these features are often dubbed &#8220;Hypercomics&#8221;, and can even have multilinear yet interrelated storylines. The current exhibition at the Pumphouse Gallery in Battersea Park, London, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pumphousegallery.org.uk\/exhibitions\/allexhibitions\/hypercomics-shapes-comics-come\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Hypercomics: The Shapes Of Comics To Come&#8221;<\/a>, places this digital concept in a physical art gallery, set across different levels, where visitors can actually walk through the story and branch off into multiple storylines.<\/p>\n<p>Dave McKeans piece, &#8220;The Rut&#8221; uses a wide variety of media to describe a violent assault seen from three perspectives, the story becoming more ambiguous as you are led through the gallery.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2294\" href=\"http:\/\/bookleteer.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/the-shapes-of-comics-to-come\/attachment\/2294\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2294\" src=\"http:\/\/bookleteer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/davemckean1-500x374.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"416\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bookleteer.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/davemckean1-500x374.jpg 500w, https:\/\/bookleteer.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/davemckean1-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 416px) 100vw, 416px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This section, particularly the cornices that almost resemble StoryCubes,  caught my eye, as it\u2019s yet another example of a three-dimensional  comic, this time even moving beyond paper as a medium. The \u201cShapes\u201d  portion of the exhibition title suddenly seems very relevant. I wonder  how many more comics will make the transition from printed media to  sculpture or gallery installation, and whether it would still be  accurate to describe them as comics?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The cube comics I looked at in my last post used non traditional page formats, and had an emphasis on physical interaction.
